NZTech Inform – vital information required!

Recently, every second conversation I have had with members has been about the difficulty in finding the tech people they need to run and grow their businesses. I have heard from companies engaging international head hunters to track down overseas based New Zealanders in senior digital roles, in an attempt to entice them home. I have also heard of substantial sign-on bonuses to encourage swapping roles and the increasing pressure on salaries.

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to work out that there is an undersupply of tech talent! Surprisingly, if I visit the Ministry of Social Development’s new job undersupply site I find that in central Auckland there is an undersupply of dairy cattle workers, beef cattle farmers, registered nurses, deck hands, fishing hands, engineers and winemakers. Strange, but true!

This is why it is critical that every tech firm and large corporation IT team responds to the Digital Skills Survey. We know there is a tech skills shortage, but we need facts and figures to inform the Government and help policymakers in education and immigration. The survey is open all week, so if you are a senior manager in your organisation, please take 10-15 minutes to complete it. If you’re not a senior manager, please let your management team know how important this information is. You can find the survey here.

The survey results will help us work with Immigration to ensure that when borders re-open we can access international tech talent. Equally importantly, the survey captures participation by Maori, Pasifika and women in tech roles. This will be combined with an analysis of secondary and tertiary participation in tech courses and provide insight into how to improve the diversity of the tech sector.

Please help us to help you by completing the 2020 Digital Skills Survey
