November FintechNZ Update – Open Banking, The Point insights, and Member News 🚀

Kia ora,

It’s been an exciting month for fintech both here in Aotearoa and globally, with key developments in open banking, crypto, and more. Read on for insights from the release of Aotearoa’s open banking report, an invitation to the 2025 APAC Fintech Payments Forum, highlights from our Annual Meeting, and announcements for next year’s FinTechNZ Hui Taumata.

This week, I attended Payments NZ’s conference, The Point, where fintech took centre stage. Almost every session touched on the impact of technology and Open Banking, reflecting fintech’s pivotal place in the financial services landscape. This is backed up in the recently released 2024 TIN Report, which shows New Zealand’s fintech revenue has climbed to $2.88 billion, solidifying itself as the country’s most successful tech vertical.

Recurring themes at The Point, including the importance of digital identity solutionscustomer trust, and partnerships, echo the priorities FinTechNZ has championed since day one. Minister Bayly also shared his perspective, urging banks to accelerate progress on these issues, including deeper collaboration with our community.

It’s also encouraging to see the increasing engagement we’ve received from government agencies like the Commerce Commission and the Financial Markets Authority (FMA). Over the past six years, we haven’t experienced this level of consultation with our sector. Minister Bayly specifically acknowledged the work of FinTechNZ’s steering group with the FMA on the Fintech Sandbox, with more announcements on this initiative to come.

Finally, approaching global shifts, including the impact of Trump-era tariffs and our dropping dollar, highlight opportunities for fintech exports to deliver increased value in international markets. As these dynamics evolve, fintech continues to prove its resilience and capacity to drive innovation both locally and globally.

If you have questions or would like to engage further, please get in touch.

Ngā mihi nui,
Jason Roberts
Executive Director
