Technology is increasingly vital to shaping Aotearoa New Zealand’s future. From digital technologies driving productivity and creative industries like game development boosting exports to biotechnologies improving healthcare and hi-tech manufacturing leading innovation, New Zealand is making its mark globally. This makes the growing global interest in space tech an exciting and unique opportunity for Aotearoa.
In the United Kingdom, despite not yet achieving a successful rocket launch, their space-related exports have already reached £5.9b. Meanwhile, here in New Zealand we’re already leading the way. Rocket Lab’s Electron rocket has launched 53 times, and just last week Christchurch-based Dawn Aerospace achieved a milestone with its rocket powered Aurora, the first Kiwi-made aircraft to go supersonic. The potential for our space tech industry is enormous.
It’s no surprise that the Government has launched the New Zealand Space and Aviation Strategy. With a goal to double the size of our Space and Advanced Aviation sectors by 2030, they’re actively seeking input. To help drive growth, the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) is conducting an economic survey of these sectors. On another note, welcome to our newest team members, BlockchainNZ executive director, Trevor Topfer, and our new Community Manager for the IoT Alliance, Daniel Naranjilla.
I would also like to thank the 2,500 members that support the 16 tech communities in the NZTech Group. Your contributions – whether through working groups, sharing knowledge at our member events or supporting projects have helped us achieve an extraordinary collective impact in 2024.
