Welcome to the First Edition of the AI Governance Working Group Monthly Digest!

In the July-August digest, we share highlights from our working group, along with relevant events or learning opportunities, and curated resources — all aimed at keeping our community connected and informed on the evolving landscape of AI governance in Aotearoa New Zealand.

In case you missed it, we’ve tailored a collection of AI governance resources on our website designed to equip you with the knowledge and guidance needed to address the most pressing challenges in AI systems.

July-August in Review

We’re excited to share that some of our governance group members contributed to the Responsible AI Guidance for Businesses released by the New Zealand Government in early July 2025. Our team has also been engaging deeply with emerging issues — including AI notetakers, ISO standards, and their implications for New Zealand’s evolving policy and governance frameworks.

Governance is not just about structure — it’s about diversity, inclusion, and shared voice. In July, the AI Forum’s Kāhui Māori held its first in-person hui, bringing together members to shape strategic direction and priorities, a shared commitment to ensuring a strong and authentic Māori voice is reflected — from the marae, mara, and moana, to academia, government, and the commercial sector.

Upskill & Learn

Looking to bring responsible AI into your organisation?  Wellington University Professional is offering a course starting late September that explores governance models and operational frameworks. Dive into the differences between centralised and decentralised approaches, roles and accountability structures, and inclusive governance principles — including kaitiakitanga and stewardship — to guide values-aligned, high-impact AI implementation.

We’re excited to grow this community with you and to keep the conversation around AI governance active and impactful. Stay tuned for many exciting updates in our forthcoming editions.

In the meantime, follow along and join the conversation!
