NZTech Update – Goodbye 2017!

Wow, another year almost done! Thanks for staying connected and reading my weekly update, this is our last for 2017. Please let me know if there is anything you would like addressed more often in 2018.
On Tuesday, I will be in Wellington, showing the Ministry of Education our novel approach to their RFP for a national digital championship. As one of the shortlisted final three, we now have the opportunity to share the detail of a national championship, without creating a brand new event. It’s a great way to be inclusive of the many cool initiatives already out there. If all goes well this week, early next year, I will be able to share more. Fingers crossed!
I will be back in Wellington again, later in the week, to spend time with Minister Curran bringing her up to speed on our involvement in the D5 Summit in February and the Digital Nations 2030 Summit the two days prior. No doubt we will also discuss Techweek and hear plans for the new CTO role.
The Digital Skills Forum’s report into the skills shortages will now be released on Monday 18 December. The research confirms that there is a shortage, where the shortages are and where they are likely to develop in coming years. An important nugget is that student numbers are only growing at 3% per annum, whereas software programmer roles are growing at 11% and accelerating. Once the report is released, we can begin to address this challenge.

CERT reports kiwis have lost $1.1m to cybersecurity incidents in the last quarter. 29% of people who reported to CERT experienced some form of loss. Reports of ransomware have decreased. Read the full report.
