Kia ora,
Last week at our Wellington Dialogues – Digital Safety summit we gathered a diverse group of voices to explore this vital topic. Insights from Meta and TikTok experts were especially enlightening, from new approaches to teen accounts to the global debate over who should verify children’s ages – platforms or app stores?
While child safety was a major focus, the event also highlighted emerging global regulations for digital safety. For example, the EU’s new Cyber Resilience Act requires security standards for all internet connected products. Similar to the EU’s GDPR privacy laws, these regulations may not apply in New Zealand, but are crucial for any global facing products or services.
Another emerging trend is the potential liability that software developers may soon face for their code. Last month, the EU expanded its product liability laws to include digital files and software, treating them as integral parts of the product.
The EU isn’t alone in setting new tech standards – compare Trump vs Harris tech policies, and it’s clear that global tech regulation is on the rise, regardless of this week’s USA election outcome.
We’re pleased to share that NZTech recently co-funded New Zealand’s participation in developing global ISO AI standards, ensuring our voices are represented and help shape the future of tech regulations.
