Kia ora,
Seven months ago, the Minister for Digitising Government shared a Cabinet Paper outlining plans for an all-of-government strategic roadmap to accelerate the digitisation of government services. This roadmap was set to include a detailed work programme and a digital investment plan. So, where are we at with this initiative?
Did you know that government agencies are planning to spend $13.5 billion on digital infrastructure by 2028? That’s a significant investment, yet many agencies are still relying on outdated legacy systems. Currently, there are 798 public sector digital assets over ten years old with 32 percent underperforming.
It’s crucial that this digitisation plan embraces innovative solutions developed here in Aotearoa New Zealand. Why? Because our local tech is already proving its impact in transformative ways:
- Last week, New Zealand crime prevention tech firm Auror announced an NZ$82 million capital raise to continue driving their global expansion. Their software has helped the New Zealand Police save nearly $100m in productivity each year. That’s equivalent to adding over 450 extra officers and gaining 170,000 hours of capability uplift annually.
- Māori owned tech company Awa Digital has teamed up with Health New Zealand to create Tuhi, an AI-powered tool that supports clinicians by transcribing patient notes. This innovation is projected to save around $50 million per quarter in productivity improvements!
These examples show the incredible potential of leveraging local tech to solve big challenges. Let’s hope the government’s plan makes the most of it – for the benefit of all New Zealanders.
