Insights from our Executive Director

As we kick off the year, BioTechNZ is already moving full speed ahead with exciting developments in the biotech sector.  There is a lot happening, so please read this newsletter carefully as there are some action points required.

One of the highlights is the Science System Advisory Group report. This report has a lot of information in it so I advise you to take the time to read it. I did clock the quote, “We made a choice not to invest in biotechnology 30 years ago; now it appears that choice will be reversed, allowing New Zealand to seek advantage in its biological economy from scientific advances“.  Great work for all.

Submissions

New Zealand is updating its gene technology regulations to support research and development while ensuring the health and safety of people and the environment.

The Government welcomes feedback on changes to these rules and encourages you to have your say. The Health Select Committee is calling for submissions on the Gene Technology Bill 2024, with a closing date for submissions on Monday, 17 February 2025, at 11.59pm.

If you aren’t sure about submitting, I urge you to do so, even if it’s to say, “we support the bill”.

If you missed our webinar series on the upcoming changes, you can watch the video recordings here.
