NZTech Inform: Championing our science sector

Kia ora,

Aotearoa New Zealand’s biotechnology sector is a hidden gem within our tech landscape. Globally, biotech is on track to exceed $500 billion this year and is estimated to surpass a trillion dollars by 2030. Its expansion is being driven by advancements in personalised medicine, climate resilience and healthy food. Even the smallest fraction of this booming market has the power to transform our economy. This week, we’re at the Life Sciences Summit, where we’re unpacking recent changes to the science system, exploring upcoming gene regulations and accelerating export opportunities. I hope to see you there!

Cybersecurity Insights 2024: Fewer Attacks, Greater Financial Damage

The National Cyber Security Centre’s Q4 insights were released last week, revealing a complex cybersecurity landscape with both encouraging and concerning trends.

While overall incident numbers dropped significantly (34% decrease with 1,258 cases handled) and phishing attacks plummeted by more than half compared to Q3, financial impacts tell a different story. Despite fewer incidents, reported financial losses surged by 24% to $6.8 million, with nearly one-third of all incidents resulting in monetary damage.

That’s why our annual Cyber Security Summit in Wellington next week is more important than ever. We’re coming together to share strategies and solutions for minimising losses in a rapidly evolving tech environment.

From Tokenisation to DeFi: Key Takeaways from NZ’s Fintech Hui

Last week’s FinTechNZ Hui Taumata served up refreshing perspectives on tokenisation, payments innovation, fintech investment strategies, financial inclusion, and the next frontier of digital assets.

The incredible line-up of speakers discussed how tokenisation is transforming finance, enabling more secure and accessible digital assets; how insights from Australia’s open banking successes underscore the central role of payments as a stepping stone to deeper data-driven services; and why fintech providers in Aotearoa need to keep the customer at the heart of innovation.

Anthony Jones from the Hui’s long-term Diamond Sponsor, Visa, highlighted how access to credit is becoming harder for younger generations, creating new challenges for homeownership and financial security.

Looking ahead, decentralized finance (DeFi), open banking, and the expanding role of digital assets promises a dynamic future for a sector. Check out the Hui gallery.
