NZTech Inform: Aotearoa New Zealand’s tech trade in focus!

Kia ora,

Trade has quickly risen to the top of the agenda, as global tensions escalate following President Trump’s latest tariff announcements. Last week, we joined the creative sector to brief the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT) team on the latest in digital trade. I also attended a special MFAT briefing on the U.S. announcements and it was reassuring to see how well-coordinated and thoughtful the NZ Inc response is. You can explore the current tariffs and latest MFAT market intelligence here.

As international dynamics shift, many of our trading partners are actively seeking new opportunities. Today, I’m presenting to a visiting Japanese trade mission, alongside tech leaders from Hitachi, Fujitsu, NTT and Softbank, all eager to build stronger connections with Auckland’s tech ecosystem. Their focus? Finding collaborative opportunities in AI and IoT.

Later this week, we’ll be meeting with the European Union Ambassador to New Zealand, discussing how the New Zealand – European Union Free Trade Agreement can unlock new growth pathways for Kiwi tech. With many regions now looking to reduce reliance on U.S. tech, we now have a unique opportunity to step up as a trusted, innovative partner on the global stage. I look forward to sharing insights from these meetings to support your continued growth in this unpredictable global environment.
