Dr. Mahsa McCauley: Advancing Beekeeping with AI at North Carolina A&T

The Center of Excellence in Cybersecurity Research, Education and Outreach (CREO) at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University has welcomed Dr. Mahsa McCauley, a Fulbright Visiting Scholar and expert in artificial intelligence (AI), to its research team. A prominent figure in AI and technology from New Zealand, Dr McCauley is known for her groundbreaking work in integrating AI into diverse fields. Her current focus is the Bee Doctor project, an innovative initiative blending technology and nature to revolutionize beekeeping.

The Bee Doctor project initiated by Dr. Iman Ardekani employs advanced AI and machine learning techniques to analyse bioacoustics signals from beehives, enabling early detection of diseases and environmental stressors affecting honeybee colonies. By placing microphones inside hives, researchers can capture the buzzes of bees and interpret these sounds to diagnose potential illnesses. This real-time data is processed on a secure, cloud-based platform, allowing seamless communication between multiple beehives and facilitating swift interventions to protect hive health.

Dr. McCauley’s work comes at a critical time for pollinator health. Honeybees face numerous threats, including poor nutrition, pathogens, pests, and environmental stressors. The project represents a significant advancement in precision apiculture, offering a scalable, AI-powered solution to support sustainable agriculture and address global challenges in pollinator health.

“This research holds immense potential for the multi-billion-dollar beekeeping industry,” said CREO Director, Dr. Hossein Sarrafzadeh. “Dr. McCauley’s expertise and leadership in AI are invaluable as we strive to transform bee welfare through secure, innovative technologies.”

An associate professor at Auckland University of Technology, Dr McCauley is not only a leading researcher but also a passionate advocate for women in technology. In 2014, she founded She Sharp, a networking and learning group for women in STEM fields. Her dedication to fostering diversity and inclusion in technology aligns with her mission to blend traditional knowledge with cutting-edge AI solutions.

During her time at North Carolina A&T, Dr. McCauley has immersed herself in the campus community, presenting her research, collaborating with experts across disciplines, and engaging with students. She has also begun training for her Master Beekeeper Program (MBP) certification, emphasizing the importance of combining AI insights with hands-on beekeeping experience.

“This journey has been incredibly rewarding,” Dr. McCauley shared. “I’m privileged to work with talented colleagues in the US, Australia and New Zealand and contribute to research that bridges technology and environmental sustainability.”
