NZTech Inform – How Impressive Is Local Tech Export Growth?

Kia ora readers,

Another year goes by and another $1 billion is added to the revenues of the largest New Zealand tech exporters revenues.  Thanks to the annual release of the TIN report which surveys 1,000 New Zealand operated tech exporters, we know the top 200 tech firms grew revenues by 10 percent.  Revenues rose from $11 billion to $12.1 billion.

New Zealand now has three tech firms bringing in over $1 billion a year in revenues; Datacom, Fisher & Paykel Appliances and Fisher & Paykel Healthcare (local manufacturing pictured above).  Meanwhile, Datacom reported stunning revenue growth with 17 percent year on year, to $1.38 billion.  There has been amazing growth across the sector and notably, fintech companies are the fastest growing at 26.9 percent.

The announcement of the latest figures at last week’s TIN event reinforces how diverse the New Zealand tech sector is.  In this year’s top 10 fastest growing firms we have an agritech firm, a movie software firm, an online game firm, three fintech firms, a high tech manufacturer for the meat processing industry, a firm that provides systems for utilities, a high tech healthcare manufacturer and a global IT services provider.  This diversity provides so much opportunity for New Zealand with unlimited pathways into tech, opportunities for all parts of New Zealand and security against global market changes.

While all of the credit must go to the amazing founders, entrepreneurs and hard working staff of the many New Zealand tech firms, the NZTech team continues to work in the background to help make it easier for tech firms to be successful.  For example, this week, I will be back in Wellington at the Digital Skills Forum to help improve the flow of talent.

The week also includes a meeting with Paul James, the Government Chief Digital Officer to continue collaborating on improved Government procurement.  I am also working with AgriTechNZ on their current research, identifying our global competitive advantage in agritech and BioTechNZ’s forthcoming Medicinal Cannabis Summit, MedCan 2020.  I then fly to Singapore, where I am on a panel discussion at next week’s Singapore FinTech Week.

Have a great week.

Ngā mihi
