NZTech Update

Hi Readers

I hope you had an enjoyable long weekend. I visited my parents new home in Tauranga and we even got some beach time. When I fired up the phone to head home on Sunday morning Google maps knew from my calendar that I had to be home by 3pm for a delivery, it knew I was in Tauranga and that given the traffic I would need to leave just before 12. Was that a low level AI experience? It probably wasn’t, but you can be sure that as the ability for computers to learn from every interaction continues to develop at breakneck speed there will be plenty of AI moments. It is because of the speed of AI development, the potential impacts, both positive and negative, that NZTech is supporting the launch of the AI Forum of New Zealand. Tomorrow evening in Wellington, Minister Goldsmith will launch the Forum, an independent, not-for-profit organisation bringing together industry, academia and government to work together on ensuring New Zealand is ready for AI.

NZTech Update

Hi Readers

Earlier this month when visiting Japan with the Prime Minister’s business delegation, I was proud to see how well respected we are as a nation. I travelled with Zespri, ANZCO and Fonterra among others who all sell hundreds of millions of dollars of product into Japan each year. While these mainstays of our economy all use some degree of technology to maintain global competitiveness, as a nation, we are not known for technology itself. NZ Story research in Japan has found that New Zealand is known as a rugby playing nation that produces commodity food products and is a pleasant tourist destination. Tell them we have hi-tech companies and there is immediate disbelief. Tell them we just sent a rocket to space and they are incredulous. However, show them some cool agritech and it is suddenly more believable that New Zealand can do hi-tech. In most places around the world, the feedback is similar.

NZTech Update

Hi Readers

Taken at face value, language can sometimes be misleading. When my eldest child came home from his first days at intermediate school to announce he was going to study ‘technology’, I admit I was pretty excited. Tell me more, I asked. I was informed technology has two options – soft and hard. Awesome! Is that soft as in ‘software’ and hard as in ‘hardware’, I wondered, only to have my excitement quickly dashed. Silly Daddy! Soft and hard refer to the materials used to make things, like fabric and wood. Well at least the boys are doing needlework and the girls explore woodwork, I conceded, with some resignation. That’s more of an opportunity than my sisters received.

NZTech Update, ShadowTech

Hi Readers,

Techweek’17 is almost here.  When I think back to a year ago when we committed to expanding Techweek from a calendar of Auckland events to a truly national festival, we knew it would be a challenge.  With very limited funding we approached this year as our MVP.  The goal was to engage tech communities throughout New Zealand and create a national experience.

NZTech Update

Hi Readers

Over recent months, I have undertaken a challenge with my friends to run every day for 100 days. Today, as we head into our final week, I knocked off run number 93 with ease. This experience reminds me that it is easier to break a big challenge into smaller bits, and do it together.
