NZTech Update – Creating AgriTech Connections

Good morning from Silicon Valley!  This week, I am in San Jose, California with the Agritech New Zealand and Callaghan Innovation agritech immersion programme.  Our delegation includes 30 delegates from throughout New Zealand and we have a full schedule.  We are visiting several cutting edge farming facilities, meeting investors and forming connections with the US market.  On Friday, we are joined by the New Zealand Ambassador for a major international agritech announcement.  Sounds exciting, I can’t wait.

Last week, at NZTech’s CEO Forum and Tech Leaders lunch with Minister Robertson, our discussion highlighted the impact emerging technologies will have on jobs and society.  While there is broad agreement that technology changes will be disruptive, there is no quick fix or magic bullet.  Greater technology use and automation will drive much needed productivity improvements, but we also need to begin helping workers develop new skills, now.

It was encouraging to see a unanimous desire by all of New Zealand’s largest organisations to start working together with Government to help people manage through the digital transformation of our economy.  Easy to say, hard to do, however we are starting the journey!

Next week, I have a well placed catch up with Minister Woods.  Initially, this was to discuss the R&D tax credits, but now she has replaced Minister Curran across the Digital Government portfolio, we will hopefully have a broader discussion.
