NZTech Update – Countdown is on!

Last week, it was good to see the Government reopen submissions for the CTO role.  No doubt the Minister’s Digital Advisory Group will have their hands full with another wave of applicants.  Earlier this year, there were 62 applicants and I’m sure this critical role for New Zealand will attract even more interest the second time round.

Last Thursday, I had a chat with Corin Dann on the TVNZ Q&A Show about the opportunity that continued growth in the tech sector is creating for New Zealand.  While this is exciting, we also discussed the importance of future generations learning the skills they need to thrive in a digital world.  Also, what needs to be done to create new opportunities for people whose jobs will be disrupted.  If we work on this issue now, we can help close the digital divide, otherwise, the divide will only increase.

In just one week, Techweek’18 will be here!  On Monday 21 May at 9am in Auckland, join the Prime Minister, Jacinda Ardern, as she opens Techweek!  There are still tickets available for the opening session so come along, it will be great to see you there.  You can also use the ticket to check out the other Innovation Open Day events around the city.  Simultaneously, throughout New Zealand, almost 500 events will be hosted in 36 towns.  The headline AgriTech event, 10 Billion Mouths, in Tauranga has attracted an international delegation of investors representing billions of dollars. There are only a few tickets left for this event, so get in quick.

Our mentoring programme ShadowTech also begins during TechWeek.  Become involved and help young girls choose a career in tech.  Listen to what past attendees say about the day and if you haven’t already signed up as mentor, please do.  Previous mentors have learnt a lot by interacting with a younger generation.  Hosting students also increases team morale and is great for brand awareness with potential future employees.

This week, finalise your Techweek schedule, there’s so much on offer!
