The newly published Digital Skills Aotearoa (3rd edition) explores our digital skills landscape in New Zealand and globally. It issues an urgent call to equip Aotearoa New Zealand’s workforce with skills for the digital age.

The report examines our demand and supply mismatch, where the greatest unmet demand is for senior workers with specific advanced digital skills and experience. Generally, these roles cannot be filled by graduates and early-career workers. As a result of this mismatch, many graduates find it difficult to obtain entry-level jobs.

Digital Skills Aotearoa also forecasts our future demand, identifying challenges and supply opportunities.

To enable Aotearoa’s future, the report provides several recommendations. These include a collective response to our digital skills challenge, leadership from our largest employer and the need for industry to prioritise collaborative efforts to address the issue.

Key messaging:

In summary, to confidently address our skills issue will require systemic changes at such a scale that it will be impossible unless the tech industry and other large employers undertake a more collaborative and aligned approach with the government.

  • Globally, demand for people with advanced digital skills continues to grow, with governments and industry keenly aware of the need to fill the skills gaps.
  • Aotearoa New Zealand faces three specific challenges – a struggle to fill advanced digital roles that require experience and specific skill, challenges placing early-career tech workers into industry roles and inspiring more rangatahi to consider tech.
  • Low levels of investment in upskilling existing staff continues.
  • Immigration will remain important to ensure the market can obtain specialist skills that cannot be sourced locally or immediately.
  • Research reinforces the challenges and highlights their complexity.
  • More coordination is required throughout the ecosystem, to build advanced digital skills.
  • Report recommendations include:

    1. Collective response to digital skills challenges needs to mature rapidly
    2. Government, as largest employer must show leadership
    3. Industry must prioritise collaboration and abandon rhetoric

Each of these recommendations includes a subset of action tasks. Please view the full report for further information.
  • To ensure New Zealand’s digital future, urgent collective action and investment is required.
