Ensuring New Zealand’s Cyber Resilience

NZTech has submitted feedback on the Budapest Convention and Related Matters Legislation Amendment Bill, supporting the Government’s efforts to align with the Council of Europe Convention on Cybercrime. This alignment is crucial as cybercrime continues to pose significant financial and security threats to New Zealand.

Why It Matters

Cybercrime is a growing challenge, with financial losses in New Zealand exceeding $18 million in 2023 alone, as reported by CERT NZ. As technology integrates further into our daily lives—through smart cities, autonomous systems, and connected medical devices—cybersecurity is increasingly tied to health, safety, and national resilience.

NZTech’s Recommendations

  • Ensure clear distinctions between data controllers and data processors to align with established privacy frameworks, such as New Zealand’s Privacy Act (2020) and international standards like the EU’s GDPR.
  • Implement robust oversight and review mechanisms to safeguard individual rights and privacy under the proposed legislation.

Our Commitment

NZTech is dedicated to improving New Zealand’s cybersecurity performance, advocating for legislation that protects New Zealanders while fostering innovation in the tech sector.
