Visit Tech AllianceThe Tech Sector Key Metrics Report 2024, published annually by NZTech, brings together the most up-to-date data from government and industry sources to provide a consolidated picture of New Zealand’s technology sector. By aggregating statistics on economic impact, exports, investment, skills, and talent, the report highlights both the opportunities and challenges shaping Aotearoa’s digital future.
This year’s report shows the tech sector continues to be a powerful driver of growth and innovation, contributing $23.8 billion to GDP and accounting for 8 percent of the national economy. Technology has also cemented its position as New Zealand’s third-largest export earner, with $11.4 billion in goods and services sold offshore. Despite these gains, the sector experienced its first workforce contraction since the global financial crisis, employing 119,520 people in 2024. A sharp decline in international ICT visas — down 67 percent year-on-year — is intensifying skills shortages, while diversity gaps persist in tertiary education.
The findings underscore a sector that is globally competitive and increasingly vital to New Zealand’s prosperity, but one that also requires sustained investment in skills, talent, and inclusion to unlock its full potential.
