Vocational Education and Training Reforms Consultation

Submission by NZTech to the Ministry of Education

Our rapidly growing tech sector needs more skilled workers but training and vocational education pathways are lacking. Businesses in other sectors across the economy are also facing shortages of workers with digital skills. Government agencies, polytechnics and other providers must continue to work with industry to develop pathways.

Key points in our submission include:

  • Digital technologies should be recognised as a separate industry.
  • Cadetships and apprenticeships are vital to the sector’s future and for creating new pathways for a more diverse workforce.
  • Elements of the Workforce Development Council (WDC) system should be retained.
  • The importance of Skills Framework for the Information Age (SFIA).
