Urging political parties to prioritise our digital future

Kia ora,

The elections are fast approaching and we have been catching up with Members of Parliament (MP) to discuss different aspects of tech and digital, to help ensure no matter who ends up in Government, they understand the opportunity and challenges. In stark comparison to previous election build ups, MP’s are actively seeking advice as they work to understand digital opportunities better. Our growing network of senior technology leaders from across New Zealand’s largest non-tech organisations, the Tech Leaders group, have developed a high level manifesto to open these discussions with MPs. They have been discussing why being able to trust our data is critical, how they are using tech for productivity growth, how tech has redefined the workplace, plus the importance of upskilling the nation and keeping our doors open for talent.

This week, we catch up with Grant ROBERTSON and I will be using this opportunity to reinforce the importance of the Government’s Digital Technology Industry Transformation Plan (ITP). Progress has been hampered by COVID-19 and the upcoming election cycle. However, if Labour returns to Government, our aim is to have Cabinet approve the plan as quickly as possible so work can begin in earnest.

This Thursday, following the NZTech AGM in Auckland, you can hear more about the progress of the Digital Tech ITP. Robyn from MBIE and I will facilitate conversation with Emma from the AI Forum, Don from NZRise, Paul from IT Professionals and Julie from NZTech. Please RSVP here and I look forward to seeing you in person

Finally, on a terribly sad note, I would like to acknowledge Anna Song, who tragically died in last week’s South Korean landslide. Anna was a member of the Kiwi Chamber in Korea and was a passionate advocate for growing New Zealand tech businesses into Korea. Anna was a positive, can-do person who thrived on a challenge. She will be greatly missed by many.

Ngā mihi
