The hidden potential of dyslexia

We’re supporting Unlock Innovation to understand more about the issues surrounding unrecognised and underutilised dyslexic talent in New Zealand.

Up to one in five New Zealanders are dyslexic, a neurodiversity that is often concealed. Dyslexics make up approximately 35 percent of entrepreneurs and many have founded leading brands. Despite progress in accommodating diverse learners in schools, dyslexia in the workplace is often overlooked.

In 2022, Unlock Innovation partnered with CanterburyTech and received research funding from the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE). This included a workshop series with tech companies and individual interviews.

Key findings showed that dyslexia is prevalent yet concealed, with many individuals undiagnosed. Dyslexics possess untapped potential, making it crucial for employer to recognise and celebrate their abilities.

Further research is now underway and human resources professionals, leaders, dyslexics and allies are invited to share their experiences and views. Please complete this confidential survey by Friday 3 May.

“With a deeper understanding, we aim to empower organisations to access the innovative potential we believe dyslexic individuals can bring,” says Unlock Innovation’s Ann Brown.
