How diverse is your tech team? Last week you will have received an email from me asking for your help to update important diversity data! If you haven’t already completed our five quick questions, PLEASE answer now.
Recently, NZTech and Toi Mai ran a nationwide survey of tech sector firms and organisations that have large IT teams to collect the latest data and trends about New Zealand’s digital skills shortage. This data is being used for the 3rd edition of our Digital Skills Aotearoa report and includes valuable post pandemic insights.
In earlier editions, we reported on the participation rates of women, Māori and Pacific peoples. Unfortunately, our recent survey asked for diversity data relating to the number of people in your company, not specifically the tech team. So, please take our quick poll, estimating the number of people in your IT workforce and the number of women, Māori and Pacific peoples.
We know improved diversity of the tech workforce has numerous benefits including increased profitability, access to a wider talent pool and broader social benefits. Your response will help identify where to deploy industry and government funding and support to improve the diversity of the digital workforce.
Also, please register to attend our free event on 24 August in Auckland, Bridging the Māori Participation Gap in the tech sector. Join the discussion as we reimagine a tech sector where Māori feel a deeper sense of belonging and desire to participate. We’ll take a closer look at recent research findings to help inform systemic changes across the tech ecosystem. Today, I’m attending the 10th anniversary event for Callaghan Innovation at Parliament. Callaghan provides a strong foundation for the growth of innovation, and R&D across Aotearoa New Zealand. For every $1 Callaghan Innovation has funded towards research and development (R&D), their customers spent close to $8. During the last five years alone, Callaghan has worked with more than 7,800 innovative businesses. I’m delighted to be joining their celebrations and look forward to their continued impact for our sector.
